new light in filmmaking

Salam,

Ahha, I still write. ;) for personal satisfactory purposes.

I'm taking my precious 10 minutes of my research life to write in the new light my husband has put me into. Being married to a film maker who has academic desires and passion in wanting to make a change in Malaysian films and mindsets is truly challenging and it took me 6 months to be patient and actually listen to what he say. Heck, I still might not be patient enough to listen to him properly. But I'm learning to.

My husband was a second assistant director for Langit Cinta. And it took him a gruelling 6 months to complete the whole film. According to him, 6 months is a long period. For us, research people, 6 months can pass like a wind, having no results at the end of the day. So, it's very easy to overlook and take this matter lightly. But I was there when he told me how he made the film. How hard it was to schedule the artists, props, the places you need to rent, how the oceans and weather delayed their shooting schedule. How they made their own props, how the crew grew close after 6 months together, you start to know each other at a personal level. and how over time, artis-artis yang mungkin kita selalu kutuk, are only human.

Doing research, science.. your work is unnoticeable. No one understands what you do. Only a few can relate and actually lend an ear to even care what you're doing. My mother keeps on thinking I'm studying proteins that looks like spaghetti. Pendek cerita, no one really cares.

But I guess, when you do films, it is for a broad audience. Ramai org needs to relate. it is for people to judge. And you expose your work to public. You open yourselve to critisicm, no one will really give comments to help you improve, if you're lucky, someone will say something nice and you feel it's worth it.

In the end, yes. truthfully, I still am not a big fan of Malay films. Because it's really NOT up to par with Hollywood, Bollywood, Korean dramas and such. But I guess, we're slowly going there. And at the end of this post, I'm just asking for people out there to not be so judgemental and see things from a different perspective. haha. baru rasa sakit, sebab nampak suami sendiri cari rezeki susah payah.. in the end orang pandai kutuk je what he does.

In the end, orang yang buat kerja ni are humans, and yes. film tu lagha, film tu tak islamic, dan banyak lagi kelemahan dia. but if no one does it, no one wants to improve it, it never will be better. Kasi can la. give productive comments. if they don't listen, itu hal dia. But we've done our dakwah.

10 mins are up! and I'm back to doing science :)
